CONJUGATED LINEOLIC ACID (CLA)

Not a good tattoo idea.
Conjugated Lineolic Acid (CLA) is a naturally occurring,  potent weapon in the arsenal against metabolic and lifestyle-related diseases, including obesity. It's been shown to reduce:

  • osteoporosis
  • cancer
  • high blood pressure
  • cardiovascular disease
  • insulin resistance and...
...CLA proves to be a powerful force for body fat loss, body composition maintenance, building lean muscle, and fighting carcinogens while increasing nutrient absorption.

In fact, a study showed that women with high CLA levels in their diets had a 60% breast cancer risk reduction. (Aro, A., S. Mannisto, I. Salminen, M. L. Ovaskainen, V. Kataja, and M. Uusitupa. "Inverse Association between Dietary and Serum Conjugated Linoleic Acid and Risk of Breast Cancer in Postmenopausal Women." s 38, no. 2 (2000): 151-7.)

WHERE CAN I SOURCE CLA?

I knew you were going to ask that. For all you butter coffee fans out there, you'll be happy to know that grassfed butter/ghee are your number one source. Coming in a close second is grassfed/finished beef and tallow (see graphic above).

CLA accumulates in the fat of grazing ruminants. Unfortunately today, most of our livestock is grainfed. Meaning we consume up to 80% less(!) CLA than before factory farming became widespread in the early 1970's. Making the switch to grassfed/grass-finished from feedlot meat and dairy will increase your CLA consumption exponentially.

IN A FAT LOSS PLATEAU?

Go for grassfed or even better, grass-finished
It happens. It's supposed to happen. By plateau, I don't mean you just started treating your body better for a month and there was one week of no fat loss or a little gain. That's not a plateau. That's recalibration.

However, for those of you who've been after your body composition goals for a while now and seem to be spinning your wheels, here's some good news:

A Journal of Nutrition study revealed 3000mg of daily CLA doses in humans resulted in a 20% body fat reduction. In the group taking the CLA, there was an average loss of seven (7) pounds of body fat per person.

If you're going to use a CLA supplement, beware and do your research. Many of these are synthetic and have been reported to have negative side effects. If you're in a plateau and considering supplementing your nutrition with a manufactured CLA, please, please, please be sure your Omega 3:6 ratios are on point (see page 15 of No Fail Fat Burning for Women)

CLA supplements tend to have astronomical Omega 6 levels with little-to-no Omega 3's.

Women just beginning your body fat loss journey: please do not use a supplement. If you have excess body fat that is a sure sign your omega 3:6 ratio is waaaay out of whack. Switching your meats and dairy to grassfed and/or grass-finished is all you need to do.

  1. Hey Michelle,
I drink butter (caffeine free) coffee or tea most mornings. I am glad about the CLA in the butter, but now I am concerned about the amount of omega 6 fat I consume compared with omega 3. How much omega 3 do you suggest we eat (or supplement) in our protocols, to offset the butter and other fats we consume?

    Many thanks,
    Star
